A clinical study has shown that lavender essential oil has a place in hospital Intensive Care Units to improve patient outcomes. A randomized placebo-controlled parallel study evaluated the pain-relieving benefits of lavender, bitter orange, and saline (placebo). People admitted to the intensive care unit inhaled either lavender or bitter orange essential oil (5 drops placed on gauze and inhaled for 30 minutes while 10 cm from the nose) or saline. The lavender group experienced significant reduction in pain scores especially at three hours after inhalation.
