4 Ways to Use Eucalyptus Globulus Essential Oil

This Australian native releases an aroma that is deeply penetrating and refreshing to the senses. It is one of the most well known varieties of eucalyptus. Eucalyptus globulus is used a lot in the United States and Germany as an expectorant component of cough and cold medicines including lozenges and syrups. Also known as Blue Gum eucalyptus, it is used in aromatherapy as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, decongestant, and expectorant. It is cooling, stimulating, clearing, antibacterial, and antiviral*.

In Chinese medicine it is used as a lung qi tonic to open the breath. On an emotional level it is uplifting, refreshing,while clearing and stimulating the mind. This is great for concentration and mental exhaustion. It balances when there is an energy imbalance. It cleanses when there is negative energy or conflicts. In those times when you feel like you need “room to breathe“, and are feeling constricted both physically or emotionally- grab some eucalyptus.

Here are a few ways you can use Eucalyptus globulus essential oil*:

Eucalyptus Bath- Not only will adding this to your bath open up your breath-way, it will also help with muscular aches and pains. This is especially helpful if you have a cold or flu giving you body aches.

In a Jar add 8-10 drops Eucalyptus + 1 cup Epsom Salts + 1 tbsp castile soap (especially for sensitive skin) + 1 tbsp carrier oil (optional). Add blend to bathwater right before getting in. Soak for 20 minutes and breathe in the vapors.

Inhalations– Add a drop or two of eucalyptus to a tissue and take deep breaths to open up your nasal passages and invigorate your senses.

Steam Inhalation– Add 2 drops of Eucalyptus to hot water (when about to boil). Place your nose about 12″ away from the bowl and inhale. I like to cover my head with a towel. Don’t inhale the steam constantly and if you notice any irritation or discomfort, stop immediately. Steam inhalation can help with colds and influenza and to loosen up mucous stuck in the lungs.

Bedtime Cold Blend– Diffuse Eucalyptus + Lavender + Frankincense to promote  restful sleep during a cold.
